Short story: Martin
Item
There are so many images I could choose, for the Poverty Truth Community has shaped, moulded and made me in so many ways. There are so many friends that I've made through the different commissions, through the community as it has emerged, and through the broader network in which I've become involved.
But this is the picture that I've gone for. It marked the first public statement of our work together and it was incredible, almost unbelievable. The room shone, not because of the walls or the chandeliers but because the people shone. The reality of poverty was shared in dance, and drama, and animation, and rap, in conversation. But above all it was shared with dignity and it’s felt like that’s been an ongoing reality. Even in the darkest of times, and they've been many of those over the last 15 years, people have spoken, and have been heard, and things have changed.
I remember that first Saturday almost like it was yesterday. Never quite sure through who would turn up, until the room was packed and the journey began.
