Short stories: Marie Therese

Item

When Elaine came to meet me to invite me to become a member of the Poverty Truth Commission she gave me leaflets on the previous commission I was commissioned to. And they had a big impact on me. I loved the picture of, its Marie holding a boombox, and there's also a postcard with lots of boom boxes, and two ladies holding boom boxes, and it just looked really fun and trendy, and also to go with that there was a picture of everyone from that first commission on this stage at the City Chambers having done all their performances and she described all the performances and sounded really strong and positive.

The item I have chosen is a loose button.

If I find a loose button in the house I'll keep it just in case. If your top loses a button it then looks broken and is noticeable to others who may then judge you as unable to afford decent clothes and be lesser than them.

I was always struck by the impact of choice of shoes worn to school in the short film created by a young Courtney talking of the discrimination rife in schools over what you wear. Being accepted or rejected depending on the trend. A fortune to parents, but life-changing to people's in the midst of it.

Title
Short stories: Marie Therese
Description
Transcripts by a community member. In the first, they recall leaflets featuring images from the first commission, including photos of participants with boomboxes and a group on stage at the City Chambers. They describe the materials as impactful, fun, and positive. In the second they reflect on the significance of a loose button as a symbol of judgment and social perceptions related to poverty. They connect this to experiences of discrimination in schools over clothing.
