The background I used is a map. I found a map over there that had Possilpark in it, and that’s a starting point for me, and that’s why I’ve got Possilpark underlined, with the car, and the hand going forward.

And I’ve put a collage of words round because it’s like a trip round my journey in the Poverty Truth Community where words like understanding (understanding the different types of poverty that we all encounter), listening to everybody’s views - there could even be a shift in your views, and then when we go out and tell our stories. We have to trust each other, and the trust is a big part.

Community I’ve put kind of centre because we are a community and within the Poverty Truth Community, there’s other communities that we work with likes of kinship carers, disability groups, refugee rights, human rights things like that. But we’re all one part of a big community and we’re very diverse.

At the centre of the collage is the tree.  I always liken the Poverty Truth Community to a tree where the PTC is the trunk but the roots spread out and we’ve all spread out in different, diverse groups. Hopefully we eventually get to a successful conclusion together.

You might be wondering why I put the UK map there.  When I first started the PTC, I was very much Scotland-focused, deal with poverty in Scotland that’s it, everybody else will get it eventually. But as the roots went out and I travelled round the UK, I started seeing poverty in other parts of the UK and my views quickly changed, they shifted, instead of focusing solely on Scotland.  I still believe Scotland should have its own political independence but there’s a bigger fight we need and it’s for children.  I grew up in poverty as well as being in poverty as an adult and I would never want any child to go through what I had to go through. And now whether the child or the person in poverty is in Kent or Kilmarnock I will give exactly the same input, strength, commitment to helping that person and stopping poverty in that part of the world.
